WHAT
ARE EAR MITES?
Ear
Mites (Otodectes cynotis) are parasites of the external
ear canal. They infect dogs, cats and sometimes
humans as well.
How
to recognize Mites? You will see your dog ear
canal is extremely inflamed. Below are some symptoms:
- Vigorous
head shaking
- One
or both ears standing crooked suddenly (on breeds
such as German Shepherds, etc.)
- Constant
scratching of the ears
- Rubbing
head and ears on the ground and furniture
- Red
ears or off color ears
- Excessive
wax, off color wax (reddish brown, yellow, black
specks etc.)
- Inflamed
ear
The
mites are known to go from the ear canal to other
part of your dog and may cause irritation. We have
been told by our vet that mites often go to the
tail and rump area of your dog. This can be due
to the way your dog sleeps, with tail close to his/her
head.
So
if your vet diagnoses your dog with ear mite, remember
to treat his/her tail and rump area as well.
Foul
Odor, Not Mites: If your dog has inflamed ears,
excessive wax and foul odor it may be due to an
ear infection. Please contact his/her vet!
